Glaze & Color
In the rich tradition of Karatsu ware, there is a classic technique known as Kujirahada (whale skin) or Kawakujira, characterized by a distinct iron-glaze border applied along the rim of the piece. This name dates back to the era when Karatsu flourished as a major whaling base. The appearance of a dark, bold rim bordering a pale dish closely resembled a cross-section of rich whale skin, which inspired the name. While whaling is a thing of the past, this beautiful, historic term continues to live on in the world of Japanese ceramics.
